The buzzing of the device against her palm felt like a live wire searing into her flesh.

Elena stood frozen, staring at the screen as an unknown international number flashed rhythmically. The Faraday cage protocol was supposed to block all signals. This phone was operating on a frequency that bypassed civilian dead zones—military-grade satellite tech.

The bathroom door suddenly clicked and swung open. Adrien stood in the doorway, having overridden the lock. He took one look at her pale, terrified face and the glowing device in her hand, and crossed the room in two long strides.

"Don't answer it," Elena choked out, trying to throw the phone into the sink.

Adrien snatched it from her grip mid-air. He didn't hesitate. He swiped the screen to accept the call and brought the phone to his ear, his eyes locked onto Elena’s terrified gaze.
